In the beginning
God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep,
and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said,
“Let there be light,”
要有光
and there was light.
Genesis 1:3, NIV
From nothing to something
light suddenly appeared

Even visually, it carries a powerful sense of impact.
The Chinese character 光 has a similar visual force. Its six strokes connect with one another, while each extends outward in its own direction.
For someone encountering Chinese characters for the first time, there is a simple image that can help you remember how to write it:
The sun rises above the horizon with its rays, while long shadows stretch across the ground.
光
guāng
Light

“Let there be light,”
Was this light sunlight? According to the account in Genesis, no. The sun, moon, and stars appear later.
This leads to another question:
when people in ancient China wrote 光 thousands of years ago, what were they trying to depict?

The same ancient form has been interpreted in different ways, giving rise to several scholarly explanations of early 光.

One interpretation suggests that the lower part of the early form of “光” represents a person, while the upper part is associated with flame or light. Taken together, the character may depict a human figure carrying or emitting light or fire.
Seen from a modern perspective, such an image naturally invites further questions: what might a “luminous person” have meant?
A Luminous Figure

Lamp Light and
Lighting Devices

Heji 5935
Another interpretation understands this form as an image related to ancient lighting. From this perspective, the emphasis is not on a person emitting light, but rather on the relationship between a person and lamps, flames, or the act of illumination.
Under this interpretation, the early form of “光” still represents light as experienced by people—the difference lies in where that light comes from.

Light Itself
Another interpretation does not attempt to reduce the entire form to a specific person or object. Instead, it emphasizes that the form may represent the phenomenon of light itself.
The same ancient form
Some see light on a human figure
Some see light produced by a lamp
Others see light itself more directly
More than three thousand years later, we can still see these surviving forms, but it is much harder to fully return to the world of the people who first wrote them
Some things are seen again
Some things, for now, remain within time

Over the centuries, the written form of “光” continued to change. As Chinese writing gradually became more systematic, the structure of the character also began to stabilize.
In the course of this evolution, Small Seal Script is especially worth pausing to examine. It still retains the unfamiliar quality of early Chinese writing, but its structure has become clearer, and the outline of the modern form of “光” begins to emerge.
The character continued to change in the centuries that followed.
After a long process of evolution, the ancient form was repeatedly refined and reshaped, eventually becoming the six-stroke character “光” we write today.

In these expressions, “光” is still closely associated with brightness, rays of light, and visual experience.
It can also appear in expressions such as:

In modern Chinese, the most direct meaning of “光” is still light, and it appears in many everyday expressions:
壹 Light
But over time, “光” also developed meanings that seem completely different.
Here, “光” no longer directly refers to visible light. It can mean bare or uncovered, and it can also mean completely used up, with nothing left.

叁 A Fun Twist
There is also a fun modern expression in Chinese:
月光族
The word 月光 originally means:
Moonlight
the light of the moon.
But in 月光族, the same two characters are understood differently.
月 refers to “every month,” while 光 takes on the meaning of “completely used up, with nothing left.”
So it becomes:
Every month. All gone.
Every month, everything is spent.
The same two characters, 月光,
can describe moonlight in the night sky—
or an empty wallet at the end of the month.

月光
Photography depends on light. When light and exposure are properly controlled, an image can preserve color, depth, texture, and detail. But when too much light enters the camera, the result can be very different.

The objects in the scene have not actually disappeared, but their details may no longer be recorded by the camera. Edges begin to fade, saturation decreases, and the differences between objects gradually disappear. In the end, the image may be reduced to almost nothing but black or white.
This reveals an interesting paradox in light itself:
Light helps us see.
But when light becomes too intense, we may actually lose the details we were once able to see.
Too little light, and we cannot see. Too much light, and we may not be able to see either. What creates an image is often not the greatest amount of light, but the right amount of light.
Photography requires balance
And in traditional Chinese thought
avoiding both excess and deficiency
and seeking an appropriate balance
has long been an important ideal

Some things can keep taking up space within us: fear, desire, shame, obsession, or those things we know we should let go of, yet somehow cannot.
When our attention remains fixed on them, they can grow until they seem to become our whole world
But what if there is a kind of light far beyond human understanding?
